Choose pipe bursting when…

  • Sections of the line are collapsed or severely deformed — a liner can't pass through.
  • The line is undersized for the home and needs upsizing.
  • The pipe material is beyond lining tolerances (badly scaled cast iron, crushed Orangeburg — see our Orangeburg guide).

Choose CIPP lining when…

  • The pipe is structurally round but cracked, leaking at joints, or invaded by tree roots.
  • The run has multiple bends a bursting head can't negotiate.
  • You want the least possible ground disturbance — lining can often run through existing cleanouts.

The honest answer: you don't choose — the camera does. A proper camera inspection shows the pipe's material, condition, and geometry, and the right method falls out of that footage. Be wary of any contractor who names the method before seeing the pipe.

Frequently asked

They overlap heavily. Bursting often runs slightly less per foot ($60–$200 vs. $80–$250 for lining), but site conditions decide the real number — bursting needs launch and receiving pits, lining needs a structurally intact host pipe.

Both are long-term fixes. A burst-in HDPE pipe is a brand-new pipe with a 50–100 year life expectancy; a properly installed CIPP liner carries a 50-year design life. Either outlives the original pipe's remaining decades.

Yes — that's one of its signature advantages. The bursting head can upsize the line (for example 4-inch to 6-inch) in the same pull, which lining cannot do.

A fully collapsed section usually rules out lining, since the liner has nothing to travel through. Bursting can often still work, or a small spot dig fixes the collapse and the rest is lined.
