Updated July 2026 · Trenchless Repair editorial

Orangeburg pipe is essentially tar-impregnated wood fiber — layers of wood pulp and pitch pressed into a pipe during the steel-strapped decades of 1945–1972. It was cheap, light… and it is now failing in every neighborhood where it was laid.

Why it fails

  • It absorbs moisture and slowly delaminates — the walls soften and blister.
  • It deforms under load — the round pipe gradually 'eggs' into an oval until flow chokes off.
  • Roots pierce it easily — far more easily than clay or cast iron.
  • It's past design life — rated ~50 years; the newest of it is over 50 years old today.

Replacement options and cost

Orangeburg is the textbook case for trenchless: the pipe is doomed, but the yard above it doesn't have to be. Bursting pulls a brand-new pipe through the old fiber shell in a day or two.

Questions

Frequently asked

Homes built or re-piped between roughly 1945 and 1972 are candidates, especially in postwar subdivisions. Only a camera inspection confirms it — Orangeburg has a distinctive dark, layered, often deformed appearance on video.

It was rated for about 50 years under ideal conditions and often deforms sooner. Every Orangeburg line still in service today is past its design life — failure is a matter of when, not if.

Sometimes. If the pipe still holds a round enough shape, a structural CIPP liner can renew it. Badly deformed ('egged') sections can't accept a liner and call for pipe bursting instead. The camera decides.

If a scope confirms Orangeburg, planned replacement on your schedule beats an emergency with sewage in the yard — same repair, calmer week, and often better pricing than emergency rates.
